Rip off or Reward? - Rebates
One of the most popular marketing/advertising techniques these past few years has been the concept of rebates. Rebates have become increasingly popular and especially so on electronic items. Walk by your local electronics store and you will most likely see banners touting cash off for immediate purchase.
Although it might seem too good to be true, there are times when rebates can help save you a lot of cash. But that really depends if the rebate is in cash or if the rebate is for the next product purchased from the store.
A cash rebate is when you get cash back after you purchase a product. Most cases you have to mail in a form and the original receipt. A next purchase rebate is when you buy a second product and get a discount off the retail price. So depending on your budget both methods can save you money.
Here are a couple of key points to note:
#1 Get your rebates from reputable companies!
If a large reputable company promises the rebate it usually honors it words. I have had experiences where I picked up a product saying that Ill get a cash rebate if I send in a form, but the cash never came. So if you are discount shopping Ill suggest you do that in the large firms.
#2 Be sure you have all the forms required to file for the rebate before you leave the store.
Certain companies require that all the fields in the forms be filled up AND they also require an original receipt. So read the terms and conditions before leaving the store. Going back to the store can be a hassle.
#3 Have copies of everything!
Make sure that you got a back up copy of all forms and receipts. Another personal experience of mine was when I had two rebates of $50 each and they both got lost in mail! Thankfully I did keep a copy so I managed to salvage my $100.
Rebates are a good thing most of the time. But always read the fine print, so as to ensure you wont get ripped off.
